The 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas was filled with innovation, excitement, and optimism. Preliminary figures show attendance numbers at roughly 140,000, with 30,000 attendees coming from outside the United States, a CES record. New tablets were introduced, appliances became smarter, wireless technology flourished, and Ford even unveiled its first electric car.

We sent a team of brave reporters and bloggers to cover the event on a daily basis. Their blogs and videos (available at our YouTube channel “iPhonelifemagazine”) highlighted the best of the show relating to iOS products. As expected, power devices were heavily represented, with iSound’s Portable Power destroying the competition with a 480-hour power supply. Other highlights included the wireless flash drive AirStash, the MiLi Pocket Projector, various futuristic-shaped audio docks, and Magic Cube, a projection keyboard that tracks your finger movements.

Staying fully charged at CES

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is the ultimate proving ground for cell phone technology. Over 100,000 visitors are vying for a limited supply of network connectivity, and the constant searching for a signal by your cell phone can drain battery power quickly. Fortunately, a number of solutions to this dilemma were on display at CES.

The iSound Portable Power Max ($140, iSound.net) and iSound Portable Power ($90, iSound.net) deliver 16,000mAh and 8,000mAh respectively. In addition, they have 5 USB ports and even a built-in LED flashlight. You can use all of that power to repeatedly recharge your iOS device or charge five USB-powered devices at the same time. This might seem a heresy, reducing the sleek modern device back to the days of shoulder pads and the briefcase.

But the benefits are obvious for the heavy tablet user. Typing on a physical keyboard (connected via Bluetooth) is a lot faster and more comfortable than tapping away on the virtual screen keyboard.

When you don’t need the speed and ergonomic benefits of the real keyboard it’s simple to use the iPad in its normal manner, either in the keyboard case or out on its own as nature intended.

Apple’s £56 iPad Keyboard Dock offers the user a more comfortable typing experience than if he or she used the screen keyboard but it demands a separate carrying case or bag. It also works in portrait mode only, when most of us prefer the standard landscape laptop orientation.

iPad keyboard cases – such as Sena’s Keyboard Folio – integrate a soft silicon Bluetooth keyboard, which is lightweight and pretty resistant to knocks and other physical dangers.

iSound looked at all the available Bluetooth keyboards but wasn’t happy with any of them. It decided that there was no better keyboard for the iPad than Apple’s own £57 Apple Wireless Keyboard.

Apple’s keyboard is certainly a better keyboard than the one in the Keyboard Folio but you still have to store and carry that around in a separate case, as it’s not integrated.

iSound’s solution is simple – build a case that carries and protects both the Apple iPad and the Apple Wireless Keyboard, and offers the best iPad stand options.

The iSound Keyboard Portfolio offers a stand-up landscape Display View that is the most comfortable and ergonomic for typing using the Apple keyboard, created by swinging the outer flap into a crease at the top of the case. (The crease is also a pretty good case handle when carrying it around.)

There’s also a Type View, which is great for more laid back touchscreen use with a nice, firm feel to it.

The iPad will also stand in portrait orientation within this case, although rather awkwardly.

As an iPad case the iSound Keyboard Portfolio is made of genuine leather, hard-backed for extra protection. Its suede interior offers softer protection for the iPad inside.

There’s a pocket for the Apple Wireless Keyboard, and another for your cables.

iSound claims that its Velcro fasteners help avoid wireless signal interference that are a risk with magnetic case closures.

The Sena Keyboard Folio’s leather is softer and more luxurious than that of the grainier iSound Keyboard Portfolio but the latter is just as business smart in its looks.

The Keyboard Portfolio is about 4cm taller than the Sena and most other iPad cases so that it can carry the larger Apple Wireless Keyboard.

It’s a trade-off – to use the best available Bluetooth keyboard the case needs to be larger than the average iPad case. The cable pocket – for a recharging cord or the Apple Camera Connection Kit, for example – is especially handy, and ignored in most other cases.

The Apple Wireless Keyboard is also bulkier, although not hugely noticeably heavier than the third-party silicon Bluetooth keyboards favoured by other keyboard-case manufacturers.

Another advantage of using the Apple keyboard is that you can also use it with your desktop-bound Mac when not travelling with only your iPad.

There are a number of cases and covers available in the collection. There’s also some travel headphones, which are quite colorful. Kids will probably love them. The cases include plush cases and skins for your iPods and iPhones. The case for the iPad is rubberized so that should help protect it.

The basic model is about the size of the new Apple TV and the Max model looks like a thick iPhone 4.  There’s an external AC brick as well, but the power-to-size ratio is terrific.  Right now, this info is based on our brief hands-on at CES.  We will have to do an in-depth review to measure real-world battery life and just how long it takes to recharge the device itself.

If the Portable Power Max is as good as advertised, imagine the lengths you can go to without worrying about power.  I hear Mt. Everest has WiFi now!

This power source gives 16,000 mAH of battery power and is equipped with five USB ports.  It will juice your cameras, iPhones, iPods, iPads, Android, Blackberry and other USB devices simultaneously.  This concept is handy considering we’re using more devices these days all at once.

What’s most impressive about this USB backup battery is that it doesn’t operate like an ordinary outlet or charger.  Its 16,000 milliamps mean that it doesn’t require constant recharging, which is often needed for data hungry, power-draining devices.  The Portable Power Max is meant to give you 30 additional hours of power usage for the iPad, or three days of steady use.  Your smartphone can also be boosted 11 to 16 times over.

Other noteworthy features of the black and silver charger include an LED light that prompts you on the charging status and an AC/DC power adapter.  The charger is also designed with a built-in flashlight at one end.  We’re not quite sure to what capacity this feature comes into play other than charging devices in the dark.  A USB cable with mini and micro connectors also supplements iSound’s Portable Power Max.  It retails for $130, and you may be able to find it at a cheaper price on Amazon.

The dreamGEAR iSound charger could prove to be vital in helping you stay connected traveling on the road or across the country.  It appears to be so effective, that in all of its portable glory, you could leave it at home while traveling and still have enough power when you return.  Think you’ll give it a try?  What kind of battery power does your charger currently give you?

Ken Schrader has signed on to drive the Red Bull No. 82 machine. Scott Speed is the regular driver for that car. These car’s regular drivers aren’t qualified to enter the race. However, Elliott and Schrader are eligible.

EA Sports has recently announced that they won’t be continuing their partnership with NASCAR. They say most of the staff involved with the NASCAR gaming has moved on to the newer Mixed Martial Arts gaming.

However, EA Sports has recently announced that they are sticking with Tiger Woods.

Nintendo didn’t make the Wii Activ3 Workout Kit but they should have.  This package comes with a leg holster with a nunchuck slot, a set of handles, three resistance tubes (light, medium, heavy) and a carrying bag.

This would work great with a variety of games including My Fitness Coach, Gold’s Gym Workout and my personal favorite, EA Sports Active.

If you are thinking of buying the EA Sports Active Multiplayer Pack I would recommend that you consider this workout kit instead because of the tubing

Many times, I’ve played the fitness games and wished that I could adjust the resistance because it’s gotten a lot easier for certain exercises but I still need lighter resistance for others (due to a shoulder injury).  Since there are three interchangeable tubes in this kit, it gives gamers more options (and it’s great if more than one person in your home is using the game).

Prices vary but this kit is generally under $30.  It’s a small price considering how much it would cost to get a membership at the gym!

Fourteen-year old Texas-native Danny Johnson was recently declared the Guitar Hero Guinness World Records holder for “Highest Score for a Single Song” after he hit 99% of the notes for the DragonForce song “Through the Fire and Flames” on expert level for a score of 973,954 points.

When did you first play Guitar Hero?
I first started playing about a year and a half ago, at my friend’s house.

How many hours do you log in a day?
Not much, probably 1 hour a day.

Being a skilled pianist, drummer, guitarist, saxophone and oboe player, do you think knowledge of instruments have helped you become the new GH3 record holder?
Yes, I think playing the drums helps me keep the beat of the song and playing the piano helps with finger dexterity. Plus, now I’m playing GH3 exclusively with dreamGEAR’s WarBeast, which is a full size B.C. Rich replica guitar controller. In what can only be described as a wreckless attempt to disrupt the peace, dreamGEAR has developed products specifically to encourage street fighting and general brawling among all Wii and PS3 owners.

Finally, the retro-ist, “old school” Arcade Fighter Classic Pads appeal to “classically trained” Console Fighter Ninjas out there, as they are available for Wii or PS3, but resemble the gamepads of yesteryear’s consoles, bearing striking similarities to the SNES and Genesis controllers.

Additionally, dreamGEAR is further raising tension, undoubtedly, by segregating by color. All of the Wii controllers are white, while all of the PS3 controllers are black. (Seperate – but – equal, indeed!) I guess we all know what they are trying to say by that…

And, if that’s not enough, while the industry recognizes that the “big three” consoles include not only the Wii and the PS3, but Microsoft’s Xbox 360, as well… dreamGEAR isn’t making any arcade controllers for this system, at all. One can only assume this is an attempt to cause further distrust between the different consoles’ camps and, possibly, in the hopes of inciting riots.

November 8, 2007 – Lightgun brackets have now proliferated for the Wii in anticipation of games like Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles. As we’ve mentioned several times, Nintendo’s own Zapper shell didn’t impress us at E3 due to its tommy-gun shape and squishy mechanical trigger. There are lots of third-party options however, and the most recent discovery is the Wii Game Blaster from DreamGear.

The $34.99 plastic bracket goes for the long barrel pistol look that’s more reminiscent of traditional lightguns than the various other options we’ve seen before. From the looks of the picture both of the Nunchuck’s buttons are directly accessable, while a mechanical trigger towards the front of the ‘barrel’ looks to make a connection with the Wiimote’s trigger.

It would also appear that the Wii Game Blaster was designed with gameplay elements in mind, as the barrel can apparently rotate and the Nunchuck completely detach for certain moments in games. This could be our favorite lightgun bracket yet.

Now as all Nintendo Wii fans know the biggest gripe we have with our systems are not really with the systems at all, but with the dang controller!

A raise of hands now… “Who here is sick and tired of spending money on buying batteries for their wii motes?”

Ah yes… I see a crowd of virtual hands rising. Ah yes, I feel your pain.

However there is something available on the market right now, promising all of us freedom from batteries! This cannot be true! You’re saying that I don’t have to buy batteries anymore!?

I bought mine for a decent price of $25 at Circuit City thinking I had hit the gold mine, not to mention I got the last one in the store, which sort of made me mad. I wanted at least 2 of them so I could charge 2 remotes. This product only allows the charge of one remote. Grrr! I went ahead and bought it anyway though. I knew if I didn’t I’d be waiting forever to see the Dream Gear Charge ‘n Play Charging Cradle hit the shelves again.

What Does It Come With?

The Dream Gear Charge ‘n Play Charging Cradle comes with pretty basic easy to use things. Honestly you don’t even need to read the manual to understand how it works.

You have your charging stand, or cradle where the Wii mote stand as it charges. You have your battery pack that simply clips right into the Wii remotes battery compartment in the back, you have a USB connector, and it plugs directly into the Wii, and will charge as you play. Then you have your power wall plug adapter. If you don’t want to use the USB you can use the wall plug.
